Knowlton Gets A Face-Lift (2010)

What if a truck crashed into the Knowlton School of Architecture and damaged the storefront facade in the south garden? This project is a proposal for a hypothetical rebuild of the south facade. Taking cues from Herzog and de Meuron’s Cottbus Library, the glass facade has been printed with names of famous architects, theorists, buildings, and architectural terminology. The printings become more dense in areas where shade is required, like the student lounge, and are printed in a heat-sensitive, color changing ink. The facade becomes a performative device which turns more or less opaque according to the changing daylight. At night, it is illuminated from within, becoming completely transparent. (G1 year)
